Bringing Musicians Together for a Cause
St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is one of the most important American institutions of our time. Its work is dedicated to the treatment, cure, and prevention of pediatric cancer and other life-threatening diseases, like blood disorders and HIV/AIDS among children. More than 50 percent of St. Jude’s patients are uninsured. The donations to the hospital pay for the entirety of these patients' medical bills and for the copays and deductibles of the families who are insured. As donors and volunteers for St Jude, we couldn’t help but imagine how wonderful it could be if we could multiply our modest contribution to this amazing cause. It struck us that the answer was an orchestra to play fundraising concerts for St. Jude. We’ve decided to call our new organization “Lumen Philharmonia,” which means “light” in Latin. Since the subject of childhood cancer is oftentimes a heavy one, we will strive to bring light to it with performances from talented musicians in New York, NY. A portion of our tickets will be available free of cost to cancer survivors every time we post a concert date.
Helping Children through Music
In working to end childhood cancer and other life-threatening diseases, “St. Jude” is lifting a huge weight for our collective humanity. As performers, we can help by donating a small portion of our time and sharing what we love: playing quality music together and lifting the spirits of our audience. Artistically, we’d like to include fresh repertoire in our programming that isn’t commonly heard in New York City, such as orchestral music by Latin American composers that have not yet become a regular part of the repertoire. Our goal is to prepare four concerts a year. Donations received through this website and other means prior to the performances will be utilized to help with the operational costs of the orchestra, so that we can give 100 percent of the performances profits to St. Jude and other childhood cancer-related charities.
Be a Lumen Philharmonia Volunteer
To all interested in being a volunteer performer, we guarantee a musical experience in which both ensemble and director can discover something new about the music we play, and through that create as a group a personal relationship with the material we come to share with our audience. We hope to see you soon!
